Abstract

1344314 Laminates; seaming non-metallic sheet material MONSANTO CO 10 Sept 1971 [11 Sept 1970 14 Sept 1970] 42300/71 Headings B5N and B5K Layers of porous fabric containing a fibrous thermoplastic material are bonded together by (a) providing at least one of a pair of relatively movable electrodes 12, 13 with a resilient electrically insulating member 20, e.g. of silicone rubber, such that the electrode is flanked by the member and recessed therein, (b) placing at least two layers 10, 11 of the porous fabric made from fibrous thermoplastic material between the electrodes, (c) moving the electrodes towards each other to compress the resilient insulating member and thereby substantially to fill the voids in the porous fabric and to compress the layers between the electrodes and (d) supplying radio-frequency power to the electrodes to bond the layers together. Woven or non-woven fabrics, e.g. of nylon, may be bonded together. The terminal portion of at least one of the electrodes may be convex and a seam produced comprising a maximum bond area and a diminishing bond area contiguous with the maximum bond area and having its area of greatest bond intensity adjacent the maximum bond area and, over the remainder, a bond intensity that decreases as the distance from the maximum bond area increases. In Fig. 8 non-woven fabrics 110 and 111 contact each other as they pass over roller 113 and are fed between electrodes 120 and 121, electrode 120 being recessed in resilient insulating member 122 in housing 123 having arms 119. Housing 123 is connected to rod 128 which is connected to means for providing reciprocating motions and the pressure necessary to compress insulating member 122. Radio frequency source 124 is connected to electrodes 120 and 121 by means of lines 126 and 125 respectively. The bonded fabric is taken up on roll 129 which moves incrementally to allow for the bonding process. Layers of thermoplastic fabric may be bonded continuously along seam lines by mounting the relative electrodes and resilient insulating members on rotating drums. Various bond patterns may also be obtained using drums.
