Abstract

1344242 Tractor trailer braking systems; hydrodynamic brakes ALFRED TEVES GmbH 24 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 8550/72 Headings F2F and F2E A braking arrangement on a trailer or semitrailer of a tractor-trailer combination is actuable upon actuation of the tractor service brake or a continuous engine compression brake of the tractor and comprises both a friction brake system and a hydrodynamic brake system including a hydrodynamic brake 11, a loading cylinder 13, a compressed air tank 10 and a relay valve 12 which is arranged between the loading cylinder 13 and the compressed air tank 10 and is controllable by an axle-load-dependent brakeforce-distributer 16. As shown in Fig. 1, the friction braking system includes wheel brake cylinders 6 supplied with pressure from a tank 3 via a trailer brake control valve 2 and a brake-force-control device 8. The tank 3 is connected to tank 10 via an overflow valve 9. A solenoid valve 14 operable simultaneously with the engine compression brake by means of an exciter circuit 17, 21 is connected in a line between the tank 3 and the distributer 16, and a pressure-medium-operated switch 20 is connected in the exciter circuit 17, 21 and also in the line leading from control valve 2 to the front or back brake cylinder 6 so that the switch 20 opens upon actuation of the friction braking system to a predetermined pressure to prevent simultaneous actuation of the friction and the hydrodynamic brakes. To initiate continuous braking the driver operates the tractor engine compression brake so that the valve 14 is operated to connect the tank 3 to the distributer 16 which controls the relay valve 12 to bring about hydrodynamic braking in dependence on the axle load. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the hydrodynamic brake may be used as an additional preliminary brake during service braking. To this end, the arrangement further comprises a second solenoid valve 24 which is closed upon actuation of the tractor service brake whereby pressure is directed to a pressure reducing valve 37, and a valve 16<SP>1</SP> and thence to the valve 16 to actuate preliminary hydrodynamic braking. Pressure is also built up from the tank 10 via connections 30, 28 to respective pressure retaining valves 22, 23 in each of the brake lines 4, 5 leading to the brake cylinders 6 of the front and rear axles, and a further pressure builds up from the connection 32 of the solenoid valve 24 to a control valve 35 which is connected to the pressure retaining valve 23 so that the braking pressure at the rear axle can attain only half the value of the braking pressure at the front axle. When the control pressure reaches a value sufficient to overcome the retaining pressure (say 3 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> gauge) in valves 22, 23 the service brakes will be brought into operation, and the pressure in the loading cylinder 13 will then be at the maximum control pressure. The exciter circuit 25 of the solenoid valve 24 may be broken by a tumbler switch to prevent preliminary hydrodynamic braking.
