Abstract

1344206 Temperature indicators JOHNSON & JOHNSON 9 May 1972 21658/72 Heading G1D A temperature-sensitive patch, e.g. for indicating the temperature of human skin, comprises a flexible backing web coated on one side with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and on the other side with a number of discrete temperaturesensitive colour-responsive indicators 16, 18, 20, each indicator comprising a layer of microencapsulated liquid crystals the colour spectrum of which is responsive to a predetermined range of indicator temperatures. The indicators have different and overlapping temperature ranges to increase the effective range of the patch. A printed chart may be provided showing the colour distribution of the patch for each of a series of temperature steps within the total range of the patch. Preferably the backing web is black, and the boundary 26 between the indicators is white. The adhesive coating and the indicator coatings may be applied directly to the backing web, or to previously applied primer layers. Preferably a transparent plastics or laquer layer covers the indicators to protect them. The indicators may include a plasticizer or humectant. The adhesive may be protected before use by a peel-off backing strip. The liquid crystals contain cholesteric esters such as cholesteryl pelargonate (nonanate), cholesteryl chloride, and oleyl cholesteryl carbonate. Examples of suitable backing webs, adhesives, primers, and transparent protective coatings are given.
