Abstract

1344087 Hydraulic boosters for brake or clutch master cylinders F E WEATHERILL Ltd 6 Sept 1972 [29 Nov 1971] 55240/71 Heading F2F An hydraulic booster for a clutch or brake master cylinder, comprises a piston 34 slidable within a casing 10 and defining inlet and outlet chambers 15, 16 with ports 14, 17 connectible to a source of fluid pressure such as a pump 3 and to the brake respectively, the piston 34 having at least one first passageway with a ball valve 36 so that fluid can flow only from the outlet chamber to the inlet chamber therethrough and a second passageway through which fluid can flow from inlet to outlet via an adjustable orifice formed by a rod 24 co-operating with a bore 39 in the piston. The pedal 18 moves rod 24 to close the orifice and cause a pressure differential across the piston 34 which is then moved to operate the master cylinder. In the event of pressure failure from pump 3 the master cylinder is operated manually by means of rod 24 moving piston 34 the ball valve allowing reverse flow of fluid.
