Abstract
134,394. Goss Printing Press Co., (Goss Printing Press Co.). Dec. 2, 1918. Feeding webs.-Web roll changing-mechanism for printing or other machines comprises means for rotating the new roll at the same surface speed as the running web and tapes to which the end of the new web is attached, adapted, when the new roll is rotated, to carry the end of the new web into contact with the running web. As shown, a frame 10 arranged beneath the press room is provided with bearings 15, 16 for two rolls 11, 12. The running web 19 passes round a guide-roller 20 to the bite of rollers 22, 23 carrying tapes 26, 27 which feed the web to the printing &c. machine. The end of the new web passes round a guide-roller 34 and is attached by paste or pins to tapes 41, which are attached at their ends to shafts 37, 38 and pass round the rollers 34, 22. The shaft 37 is provided with a spring tending to wind the tapes 41 thereon but too weak to rotate the roll 11. The shaft 38 is provided with a weaker spring tending to retract the tapes and also with a cord drum by which it may be turned to wind the tapes thereon. A latch pawl 49 normally holds the shaft 38 to prevent winding of the tapes on the shaft 37. The means for rotating the roll 11 comprises belts 62 passing round upper pulleys 63 and lower pulleys 61 which are fixed to sleeves loose on a rock shaft 60. The sleeves are driven constantly by gearing 57, 58, 54 and shaft 53 from the press, so that the belts 62 run at the same surface speed as the running web. The arm 64 supporting the upper pulleys 63 is secured to the shaft 60 which is provided with a toothed sector 66 meshing with a gear 67 provided with an operating handle 68. When the running web has nearly expired, gum is applied to the end of the new web which has been previously attached to the tapes 41 and the shaft 38 is released from the latch pawl 49. The handle 68 is then given an upward turn tn bring the belts 62 into contact with the roll 11. The roll is then unwound and the spring on the shaft 37 winds the tapes 41 drawing forward the end of the new web into the bite of the rollers 22, 23, by which it is caused to adhere to the expiring web 19. The web 19 is then severed by a knife 82 carried by a shaft 83, which may be rocked in either direction by cords 85, 86 to bring the knife into severing contact with the web to be cut. A new roll is then substituted for the expired roll 12, and is subsequently attached to the expiring web from the roll 11 by means of tapes 46, belts 77, and associated parts similar to those above described in connexion with the upper roll.
