Abstract

134,392. Klassen, J. H. Nov. 30, 1918. Engine and like cylinders.-A method of inlaying cylinders consists in forming a slot 141, Fig. 11, to remove the damaged part, which is then dovetailed as at 142, Fig. 12, material 143 is then placed in position and caulked in as at 144, Fig. 14, and the surface is finally finished by milling and grinding. A machine for performing these operations is shown in Fig. 1. A longitudinal movable saddle 11, actuated by hand, is provided with a post 31 pivoted on brackets 32, and which ias horizontal arms 33, 34 by which it is held and adjusted by screw studs 36, 39 against a spring 37. The post 31 at its upper end is provided with an angularlyadjustable bush 43, Fig. 2, having a pivot 48, upon which a sleeve 49 is mounted and held by set screws 46, 47. The sleeve 49 may be slightly rotated by means of an arm 61 clamped thereto which engages screws 65 held in an arm 64 in the post 31, and is provided with bushes 50, 54, 55 to hold the main spindle which is driven by a belt 59 from a shaft 27 driven by an electric motor arranged on an extension of the saddle. To the forward end of the sleeve 49 is secured the toolcarrying attachment. The attachment shown in Fig. 4 is provided with a spindle 74 which is rotated by the main spindle, and is provided with a bevel wheel 76 which engages a wheel 84 in a rotary sleeve 83 which is internally coned, and carries a split-cone which is forced forward by a screw to hold one of the tools 89, 90, Figs. 8 and 9. The attachment shown in Fig. 4, is next replaced by that shown in Fig. 5. The spindle 98 carries a cam 109 by which the hammer 102 carrying the caulking tool 111 is raised against the resistance of springs 103. A spring 110 is provided for cushioning purposes. When the caulking is finished, a milling-cutter 120, Fig. 7, is arranged on the sleeve 49 to remove the surplus metal. The inlay is finally ground or polished until it is flush with the cylinder. The casting containing the cylinders is mounted upon a longitudinally adjustable holder 123 and is locked to a front plate 126 provided with a semicircular recess which engages an annular groove 134 in a head 133 of a shackle 132 to hold the casting in position.
