Abstract

134,386. Goold, L. W., (American Laundry Machinery Co.). Nov. 27, 1918. Ironing-machines, boards for; shirt clamps for ironing-apparatus.-The neck-band end of the board of a shirt-ironing machine diverges rearwardly, preferably on a curve, as shown at 24, Fig. 4, so as to secure proper shoulder folds when the shirt is buttoned after ironing. The side curved parts are tangential to the back portion of the neck.band former. The board also widens towards the tail end, as shown, so that shirts may be ironed while unbuttoned. and opened out. The invention also comprises an expansible neckband former with a clamp for the ends of the neck-band operated by the means employed for adjusting the former. The board 9, Fig. 2, is carried by a frame 14, Fig. 1, slidably mounted on a base portion 3 carried non-rotatably on a pillar 2, and the front portion 13, Fig. 7, of the neck-band former is carried by a bar 8 secured to a fixed frame extension 6. Fig. 1, of the frame 3 so as to be maintained always in correct registering position for the recess in the pressing element. The front portion 13 is mounted on pins 11, Fig. 5, so as to sink into the covering 10 of the board when pressure is applied. A heated yoke-receiving frame 16 carried by the board is formed with a slot to accommodate a transverse rod 19 engaging rear portions of the neck-band former, so that as the board is moved on the base, these rear portions move backwardly and outwardly, as shown in Fig. 5. A clamping plate 2, Fig. 7, is mounted rigidly or pivotally on a rod 29 slidably through the relatively fixed front portion 13 of the neck-band former, and is pressed lightly into engagement with the ends of the neckband bv the fingers of the operator. It is retained in this position by a pivoted locking-plate 31 mounted in a plate 33, which is moved by a sliding member 38 to secure a greater clamping pressure, when the board is moved on its base to adjust the neck-band former. The means for adjusting the former and clamp comprises a shaft 41 fitted with an operating-arm which is raised from the position shown first to increase, the clamping pressure by the action of the rod 40 and lever 39 and then to bring about the engagement of a roller 47 on an arm 46 with a stop surface 48 on the movable frame part 14, to move the board and adjust the neck-band former. A one-way lock 60 similar to the lock 31, Fig. 7, maintains the parts in the adjusted position. In the reverse movement this lock is first released, the board is then moved to collapse the former, and finally the clamp is released.
