Abstract

1343804 Polymerizing acrylonitrile MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970 6 May 1970] 22983/71 Heading C3P Acrylonitrile is polymerized, optionally with other copolymerizable monomers, using nitrous acid or salts thereof and reducing sulphoxy compounds as catalyst components, by a process wherein some or all of the catalyst components are continuously reacted in an aqueous medium at a pH of 1 to 7 and for a substantially constant time in the reaction system of 5 to 60 minutes, and the product is continuously fed together with any remaining catalyst components into a polymerization vessel during polymerization which is carried out in an aqueous medium at a pH of 1 to 3 and temperature of 40 to 60‹ C. Specified sulphoxy compounds are sulphurous acid and sodium, potassium and ammonium sulphites, bisulphites and metabisulphites; and specified comonomers are vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, methacrylonitrile, vinyl pyridines, sodium styrene sulphonate and sodium methallyl sulphonate. In examples (1, 2, 4 and 5) acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and sodium methallyl sulphonate are copolymerized with catalysts continuously preformed from sodium nitrite and sodium metabisulphite; (3 and 6) acrylonitrile is polymerized with catalysts formed from sodium nitrite and sodium bisulphite; and (7 and 8) acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and sodium methallyl sulphonate are copolymerized with catalysts formed from sodium nitrite and sulphurous acid.
