Abstract

134,368. Rapson, F. L. Nov. 15, 1918. Hoods for motor-vehicles are adapted to be raised by rotating a screwed shaft along which travels one or more blocks connected by cables to a frame member of the hood. According to Figs. 1 and 4, a screwed shaft 13 mounted in bearings 12, 22 carries at each end a block 8 connected by a cable 9 passing over a pulley 10 to an arm 1 on the main hoop-stick 3. The shaft and blocks are preferably formed with co-operating helical grooves for the reception of antifriction balls or rollers which are circulated through a passage in or through a spiral tube on the blocks. A wick lubricator may be fitted on the tube to lubricate the balls. The blocks are prevented from rotation by projections 16 thereon, which pass through a slot 17 in a covering-tube 18. The shaft is rotated by a detachable winch handle 15, which may be similar to that described in Specifications 116,995, [Class 79 (iii), Motor-vehicles, Arrangement &c. of parts of], and 119,719, [Class 144 (i), Wheels &c.]. Springs 23 may be provided for returning the blocks when the winch handle is released at the end of the raising operation, so that the hood is free for lowering by hand when desired. The arm 21 for supporting the hood in the lowered position may be integral with the bearing 22 for the shaft 13. The shaft may instead be rotated by bevel-gearing arranged at the middle of its length, the winch handle being inserted in the back of the vehicle. As shown in Fig. 8, the cables are connected to a single block 28 which traverses a vertical shaft 29, rotatable by bevelgearing 30. In this case, the folded hood is housed in a recess 33 in the body, a plate 34 attached to the front hoop forming a lid for the recess. The covering-material of the hood, which is attached to the outer wall of the body when the hood is raised, is adapted to be detached from the body for disposal in the recess.
