Abstract

1343553 Non-woven fabrics I C I AMERICA Inc 16 June 1972 [18 June 1971] 28303/72 Heading D1R The binder in a non-woven fabric is either a methylolated polyurea or a methylolated polyureaurethane; the polyurea being characterised by the general formula wherein m is 0 or 1, q is 1 to 13, p' is 3 to 100, R' is a 3 to 5 carbon atom alkylene group, each R" is independently hydrogen or methyl and each R is independently selected from hydrogen and CH 2 OH with the proviso that at least one R is CH 2 OH; the polyurethaneurea being characterised by the general formula (A) x wherein x is an integer from 2 to 100 and each A is independently selected from the group consisting of wherein m is 0 or 1, n is 2 to 14, q is 1 to 13, R, R' and R" are specified above, with the proviso that at least one A is II and at least one A is III and at least one R is CH 2 OH. The polyurea is prepared by the reaction of urea with a diamine and the polyurethaneurea by the reaction of urea with a mixture of diamine and amino alcohol. In example 13 37.6 g urea and 200 g crude aminated triethylene glycol comprising approximately equal molar proportions of triethylene glycol monoamine and diamine are stirred at 97-190‹C for 11 hours, the solvent removed and an aqueous solution of 5 of the polyureaurethane is heated at 51‹C for 15 hours with 7.1 g of 36.7% aqueous formaldehyde. (Reference is also made to Specification 1,305,136 for further description of the binders). An aqueous solution of 10% binder and 2% zinc nitrate as catalyst was applied to a rayon fleece to give 100% wet pickup, dried and cured at 300‹F for 5 minutes. In other examples nylon, cotton, wool, silk, polyester, viscose rayon, acetate rayon, polyolefin fibres or blends of cotton and/or rayon with synthetic fibres in the form of slivers, orientated or random fibre webs which may be laminated or reinforced with yarn, filaments or scrim are impregnated with an aqueous solution or dispersion or a non-aqueous solution of the binder by dipping, padding, spraying or printing. Catalysts, softners, shrink and flame proofing agents and emulsifiers such as condensates of octyl or nonyl phenol with 8 to 17 moles of ethylene oxide may be incorporated. The binder comprises 2 to 80% of the total fabric weight. The treated fabric is dried then cured at 200 to 350‹F.
