Abstract

1343322 Coating can bodies NORDSON CORP 20 April 1971 [20 July 1970] 10204/71 Heading B2L Apparatus for spraying the interior seam of a can body comprises an airless spray nozzle 20 to which coating material is fed under pressure, the nozzle containing a check valve which is controlled by a photo-cell system 35, 36 so that the valve is only open as a can body is in front of the nozzle. Sheets of tin are taken from the bottom of a stack 12 and fed along a mandrel 10 where they are formed into a cylinder and seamed. Mounted on the end of the mandrel is a spray nozzle 20 which coats the internal seam of the can. Coating medium is fed to the nozzle by a pump P along line 25 and excess coating medium returns via a pipe 26 particularly when the valve 66 is closed. The valve 66 is urged into the closed position by a spring 107 and is opened by a piston 105 which is moved to the left by air entering the chamber 115 by the pipe 32. The adaptor 75 holding the nozzle 29 is fastened to the front of the check valve and has passages 95, 96 which carry the coating medium to the nozzle 31. The size of the nozzle opening and the pressure applied to the material causes an airless atomization of the spray.
