Abstract

1342748 Coating particles by polymerization EASTMAN KODAK CO 19 April 1971 [3 Feb 1970] 20562/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] Particles are coated by subjecting them in a fluidized state to a glow discharge treatment in the presence of a gaseous polymerizable material at 0À3-5 mm.Hg pressure. The particles are preferably of a magnetic material for use as carrier materials, mixed with toner particles, for developing electrostatic images in electrophotography. Suitable such materials are iron, cobalt, nickel, their alloys, ferrites, iron dispersed in a resin binder or a non-magnetic particle overcoated with ferromagnetic material, and preferably is of 30-1200 microns diameter. The ,polymerizable material is tetrafluoroethylene, trifluorochloroethylene, hexafluoropropylene, octafluorobutene-2, vinyl or vinylidene fluoride; hexafluoroacetone, acrylonitrile, styrene, ethylene, vinyl chloride, vinyl ferrocene, carbon tetrachloride, hexafluoroethane, methyl methacrylate, divinylbenzene, benzene, naphthalene or anthracene. The particles are preferably located between two parallel plate electrodes on a support which can be vibrated and a sufficient electrical potential is applied to the plates to form a glow discharge. The amount of polymer formed is such as to provide a coating 0À03- 0-2% by weight of the core and to give the particles a resistance greater than 10<SP>7</SP> ohms. The particles may first be subjected to the glow discharge in an inert atmosphere which is then replaced by the polymerizable material.
