1342567 Abrasive tools J A BELANCER 13 June 1972 27683/72 Heading B3D A rotary finishing tool comprises a rotatable tool body having a set of coaxial and axiallyspaced annular outer plates 11, Figs. 1 and 2A, and at least one intermediate plate 12, pins 18 on the plates adjacent the outer periphery thereof for mounting finishing units 20 to extend radially outwardly of the tool body, and means 13 located radially inwardly of the pins to maintain the plates in fixed axial spacing. The plates are formed with central openings 14 for receiving a drive shaft and are spaced apart by rods 13 which are a press fit in holes 20 in the plate 12 and secured by nuts 24 to the plates 11. Alternatively, rods 26, Fig. 2B, may receive spacers 29 to axially space the plates. The pins 18 pass through holes 16 in the plates 12 and into recesses in the plates 11. In another embodiment, the plates are mounted on a sleeve 35, Fig. 4A, which receives the driving shaft and has flanges 41 to hold the assembly together, sleeve 39 spacing the plates apart. The pins 44 are secured, such as by welding, to the outer plates 33, or by dished retainers (47, Fig. 4B, not shown). The pins may be solid or hollow. In a further embodiment, Fig. 9A, the tool body consists of an assembly similar to that shown in Fig. 4A mounted between the shoulders 71 of a pair of adapter discs 69 having apertures 70 for receiving the drive shaft. In another embodi - ment similar to that shown in Fig. 4A, the plates have relatively large holes for reducing the weight of the body. The finishing unit 48, Fig. 5, consists of inner plies 49 stapled to a U-shaped outer ply 50 enclosing a hollow rod 54 which receives a mounting pin 18 of the tool body, a recess 55 being formed in the unit to receive the intermediate plate 12, Figs. 1, 2A, 2B. In other embodiments, the hollow rod is not used and the mounting pin is received in the light of the outer ply, the inner plies being tapered, or the hollow rod is received within the lights of a reinforcing member and the outer ply. The plies may be of leather, cloth, sisal, coated abrasive cloth, or other fabric, or in the form of a brush.
