1342340 Ornamenting J E KEDDIE 14 Dec 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 60913/69 Heading B6G [Also in Division B2] A pattern is painted on a surface by directing a spray of paint towards the surface against a spray control element to be deflected by the control element on to the surface, and effecting relative movement between the spray nozzle and the spray control element so as to provide a variation in the pattern impinging on the surface. The spray control element may comprise a convergent duct through which the spray passes and from which the spray issues with an increased density; or a divergent body causing the spray to adopt a divergent configuration, e.g. a multi-sided pyramid the apex of which is directed towards the spray source. The spray control element may be moved towards or away from the source of the spray to increase or decrease the size of the pattern, or it may be rotated about any axis thereby changing the pattern. The surface may also be moved towards or away from both the spray control element and the spray source or the surface may be rotated relative to both the spray control element and the spray source, or the spray control element and the spray source may both be moved relative to a stationary surface. The colour of the paint sprayed may be changed between successive positions of the spray control element, surface or the spray source. The surface may be a smooth wall, a canvas, a sheet of paper. At least one of the variable parameters of positioning of the surface, spray source or spray control element, the spray intensity and the spray colour may be varied according to a preset programme.
