Abstract

1342101 Telomers LITHIUM CORP OF AMERICA 4 June 1971 [15 Jan 1970] 230/71 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C2 and C4-C5] Telomers are prepared by providing a solution containing (a) an aromatic compound telogen containing at least one active hydrogen in a side chain capable of being replaced by a lithium atom but devoid of other substituents reactive with the organolithium compounds defined below, and (b) as catalyst a complex of an organolithium compound and an organometallic compound of sodium, potassium, rubidium or cesium, the organo radicals in said organo compounds being heterocyclic radicals or C 2-18 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, cycloalkylaryl, alkylene, monoethylenically unsaturated organo radicals or polyenes, and gradually adding thereto over a period of time a conjugated diene or vinyl aromatic monomer taxogen to produce a liquid telomer. The reaction may be effected in a hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. alkanes, cycloalkanes, benzene, toluene and xylenes; and in the presence of Lewis bases such as ethers and tertiary amines. Many suitable reactants are listed and examples describe the preparation of telomers using butadiene, toluene and (VII-IX and XIII-XV) n-butyl lithium/n-butyl potassium complexes which may be found in situ and/or used with tetramethyl ethylene diamine, (X) n-butyl lithium/n-butyl sodium together with (XI) tetramethyl ethylene diamine and (XII) dilithio adduct of isoprene/dipotassio adduct of isoprene; using (XVI) styrene, toluene and n-butyl lithium/n-butyl potassium with tetramethyl ethylene diamine; and using (XVII) butadiene and α-methyl styrene, toluene and n-butyl lithium/n-butyl potassium with tetra methyl ethylene diamine.
