Abstract

1288057 Telomers LITHIUM CORP OF AMERICA 25 Nov 1969 [26 Nov 1968] 57671/69 Heading C3P A telomer of (a) an aromatic compound containing at least one active hydrogen capable of being replaced by a lithium atom but devoid of any other substituents which are reactive with the organolithium compound described below and (b) a conjugated diene or a vinylidenesubstituted aromatic compound, is prepared by reacting (a) and (b) in the presence of (c) a Lewis base comprising an ether or an aliphatic tertiary amine, and (d) an organolithium compound which is capable of metallating the ingredient (a). Suitable ingredients (a) include C 1-4 alkyl benzenes, particularly toluene, anisole, dimethoxybenzenes and dimethylaminobenzene. Suitable ingredients (b) include 1,3-butadiene and/or styrene and this ingredient may also contain a monoolefin, e.g. ethylene. Suitable Lewis bases include N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-tetramethylethylenediamine and 1-dimethylamino-2-ethoxyethane and the organolithium compound (d) is preferably nbutyllithium. In the examples: (1) 1,3-butadiene is polymerized with n-butyl lithium in the presence of 1-dimethylamino-2-ethoxyrthane or tetramethyl ethylenediamine using toluene, anisole or 1,4-dimethoxybenzene as component (a); (2) 1,3-butadiene and ethylene are copolymerized with the dilitho adduct of isoprene in the presence of N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-tetramethylethylene diamine using toluene as component (a); and (3) 1,3-butadiene and styrene are copolymerized with n-butyl lithium in the presence of N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-tetramethylethylene or 1-dimethylamino-2-ethoxyethane using toluene as component (a).
