Abstract
1341987 Control of gas fired appliances RADIATION Ltd 4 March 1971 6012/71 Heading F4T A control system for a gaseous fuel fired appliance comprises a gas supply conduit 3 the gas flow through which is governed by a gas flow control valve 8 in the conduit 3 operatively connected to a means responsive to the gas pressure downstream of the valve 8, in the form of a flexible diaphragm 9 adjustably spring- loaded by helical spring 10, and a phial and bellows type flame responsive device 15, 13 operatively connected to the control valve 8 to shut the valve 8 in the event of flame failure. The flame responsive device comprises the phial 15, to detect a flame at heating pilot jet 16, and the bellows 13 acting upon a pivoted lever 11 which is resiliently urged by spring 12 to also contact control valve 8. Jet 16 is supplied with gas from common inlet 4 via filter 28, piping and aperture 20 in a further flow control valve governed by further gas pressure governor 22. Means for holding annular seal 25 in a position to close aperture 20 may be a manually-operable control rod 26 or alternatively a heat deformable bimetal strip (34) (Fig. 2, not shown) having a heating coil (35). When demand for heat activates thermally responsive device 24, gas flows to jet 16 where it is ignited by standing pilot jet 30 and phial 15 is heated so that bellows 13 expands and rotates lever 11 clockwise, allowing valve 8 to open and supply gas to burner 1. If the system is provided with a suitable housing (37), a control unit is formed (Figs. 3, 4 and 5, not shown). The system or unit is suitable for controlling a gas fired water storage heater.
