Abstract
1341926 Compositions containing polyphenylene oxide and polystyrenes GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 16 July 1971 [19 Aug 1970] 33635/71 Headings C3R and C3P A thermoplastic composition comprises (a) from 1À0% to 99% by weight of an amorphous or partially crystalline polyphenylene oxide having from 0 to 75% of the crystallinity it would have if obtained by precipitation from solution by addition of a non-solvent liquid to the solution, and (b) from 99% to 1À0% by weight of a styrene resin having at least 25% of the polymer units derived from a compound of formula where R is hydrogen, alkyl or halogen, Z is alkyl, chlorine or vinyl and p is 0 to 5. The amorphous or partially crystalline polyphenylene oxide may be obtained by precipitation by adding a solution of the polymer to a non-solvent liquid, by allowing a solution of the polymer in methylene chloride to stand until precipitation is complete, or by heating the polymer above the crystal melt temperature until the crystallinity is reduced and then rapidly cooling. In Examples the crystallinity of poly-(2,6-dimethyl-1, 4- phenylene)-oxide is reduced by precipitation by adding toluene solutions of the polymer to methanol and by allowing a solution in methylene chloride to stand, and blends are prepared with high impact polystyrenes, some of which are rubber modified. Uses.-Mouldings, sheets, films, rods, tapes, electrical insulators, encapsulating material and coatings.
