Abstract

1341845 Biaxially oriented bottle E I DU PONT DE NEMOUKS & CO 17 Dec 1970 [17 Dec 1969 30 Nov 1970] 60002/70 Heading B5A A thin-walled bottle of synthetic thermoplastic resin has a section of right cylindrical shape which is biaxially oriented, the bottle having a ratio of the weight in grams of the polymer from which it is made to the inside volume of the bottle in cubic centimetres of from 0À2 : 1 to 0À005 1 and having sufficient biaxial orientation in the right cylindrical section to store a carbonated liquid with a deformation of less than 5% in 100 hours at 50‹ C. under an antogenous pressure of 75 p.s.i.g. The bottles are made by extrusion-blowmoulding, the apparatus comprising a mandrel 7 having ducts 8-10 for blowing air, an extrusion barrel 3 containing a ram 15 and a central supporting rod 4 and a two-part mould 6 slidable upwardly. With rod 4 abutting mandrel 7, slug 1 in barrel 3 is extruded by ram 15 into bead 14 and, as mould 6 moves upwardly, further extrudate 17 is expanded by air from ducts 8-10. Near the end of the stroke of ram 15, rod 4 is moved downwardly to enable completion of the bottom of the article. As shown in Fig. 2, ram 15 is operated by fluid cylinder 29, rod 4 by cylinder 30, and mould 6 by cylinder 35. Cylinder 29 is operated according to cam 23 via potentiometer 51, servo-control 44 and valves 43, 41 to effect faster extrusion for the cylindrical side walls of the bottle. A potentiometer 24 is also regulated thereby and its output voltage is used (i) to move mould 6 upward by means of comparison circuit 47, solenoid 50a, valve 49 and cylinder 35; (ii) shortly afterward to supply blowing air via valves 52, 53 and (iii) at the end of the stroke of ram 15, to retract rod 4 via solenoid 54a and valve 55, actuating switch LS-1 causing blowing air to be supplied at a greater rate. To produce bottles having recessed bottoms (Figs. 8-10, not shown), mould 6 may be lowered at the end of its cycle under control of voltage comparison circuit 47a. After mould opening, mandrel 7 may be raised by motor 32 to effect stripping against stripper fork 34. In a modification (Figs. 11-13, not shown), the central supporting rod (4a) passes down blowing duct 8 of mandrel 7 into slug (la), the extrusion ram (15a) being in the form of a solid rod. The moulding material is preferably polyethylene terephthalate, but may also be ABS, acrylonitrile/methacrylate, a methacrylontrile copolymer, a polycarbonate, polyamide, polyformaldehyde or another polyester. The mould 6, ram 15, mandrel 7 and rod 4 may all be heated or cooled. Slug 1 may be formed by extrusion, injection or compression.
