Abstract
1341465 AC track circuit GENERAL SIGNAL CORP 4 May 1971 [4 May 1970] 13099/71 Heading B7N In a continuous rail alternating current track circuit with ends defined by track shunts ST, a transmitter and receiver are provided at each end of the circuit for detecting the presence of a vehicle in an end zone of the circuit and at least one other receiver is provided at an end zone responsive to the transmitter in the other end zone for detecting the presence of a vehicle in the mid zone of the circuit. A periodically operating test shunt is provided at each end zone circuit. The shunt 14 is periodically applied by a signal from pulse generator 13 whereby at each application the increase in output current from transmitter T 1 is detected by receiver R 1 which supplies an output to shift the frequency of oscillator 10 supplying the transmitter output. This periodic shift is detected by receiver R 1 <SP>1</SP> at the other end of the circuit and this provides an output to control the application of shunt 20 across the other end of the track circuit. The corresponding increase in output current from transmitter T 2 is detected by receiver R 2 which supplies an output to shift the frequency of oscillator 26 feeding transmitter T 2 . The frequency shifted signals received in receiver R 2 <SP>1</SP> at the first and of the circuit control a flip-flop 30. If the flip-flop output signals correspond with those supplied from the switching pulse generator 13 a gate 50 operating via flip-flop 57 and driver circuit 58 maintains the track circuit relay 41 energized. A train present in either end zone prevents the periodic shift in frequency and a train present in the mid zone prevents transmission of the signals between the circuit ends, either condition leads to release of the track relay. Between the switching pulses the track circuit signal can be coded for cab signalling purposes. A frequency shift repeater station can be provided to extend the length of the circuit.
