1341374 Butene/maleic anhydride copolymers KURARAY CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [17 Nov 1970] 32982/73 Divided out of 1340277 Heading C3P A copolymer is manufactured by precipitation copolymerizing at least one C 4 olefin with maleic anhydride in a substantially wholly organic solvent comprising a mixture of ethyl acetate and tert.-butanol. In the examples butene-1, cis-butene-2, "return B.B." (a mixture obtained after extraction of butadiene from the C 4 hydrocarbon mixture obtained by the decomposition of naphtha and comprising isobutene, butene-1, trans-butene-2, cis-butene-2, 1,3- butadiene, n-butane, isobutane, propylene and propane) and isobutene are copolymerized with maleic anhydride in the presence of ethyl ace- tate, tert.-butanol and azobisisobutyronitrile. Comparative experiments are carried out using ethyl acetate, benzene or acetone.
