Abstract
1341285 Ultrasonic machining FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF 19 April 1971 [28 Jan 1970 7 Jan 1971] 20846/71 Heading B3D A method of lightening an optical element of a material of very high hardness having at least one optical face of high reflecting power comprises forming recesses subjacent to the optical face by ultrasonic machining. The element may have two parallel faces, one of which is polished using cerium oxide to have a high reflecting power and the other of which has hexagonal recesses 3, Fig. 4, formed therein by ultrasonic machining, the recesses being to a distance of 1 mm. from the finished face and forming webs 4 of 0À5 to 1 mm. thick. The finished face is coated by evaporation of aluminium in vacuo at high temperature. In another embodiment, both faces 1a, 1b, Fig. 5, of the blank are reflecting faces and recesses 3<SP>1</SP> are formed in the lateral faces of the blank. In a further embodiment, the element is formed as a prism having three optical faces, one face having maximum reflections in the yellow, one treated for infra-red and the last for ultra-violet. Recesses 7, Fig. 6 are machined in the end faces 6d, 6e. The material of the element may be glass, quartz, fluorite, synthetic ruby, white sapphire, ceramic or other material of a hardness exceeding 50 Rockwell C units. The ultrasonic apparatus consists of a magnetostrictor 9 which converts an A.C. supply 8 to acoustic vibrations of a frequency above or equal to 20,000 C/S. The vibrations are amplified by a cone 10 and transmitted to a tool 11. The tool may be of steel or titanium and has a total length of about 120 mm. and a constricted portion about 60 mm. long. The magnetostrictor is carried by a support 12 which is vertically movable along a slideway 13 and connected to a wire 15 which runs over a pulley 16 and is joined to a counterweight 14. A control lever 17 is secured to the pulley and has an adjustable weight 18 for controlling the machining pressure. A tank 20 (Fig. 7, not shown) is mounted on the worktable 19 and has flanges (21) for mounting the element to be machined. A suspension of abrasive, such as a mixture of boron carbide, water, alcohol and a wetting agent, is supplied through nozzles (22).
