1341184 Reducing molecular weights of unsaturated polymers GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 4 Nov 1970 [4 Dec 1969] 20779/73 Divided out of 1340524 Heading C3P The molecular weight of a polymer having olefinic double bonds in the main polymer chain is reduced by reacting the polymer in the presence of an olefin metathesis catalyst with a compound of formula G 2 C=CHG, where G is hydrogen, methyl or D-CH 2 - and D is a hydrocarbon group. The reaction of 2-octene with polyoctenamer in the presence of WCl 6 . EtOH and EtAlCl 2 (immediately after formation of the polymer from cyclooctene and the same catalyst) is described, and polymers and copolymers of butadiene and isoprene are also mentioned.
