The device disclosed comprises a base 5, a support 4 for the first comb 3 and supports 7 for the second comb 10. Pins 8, 9 on the supports 7 can engage slots 6<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>11</SP> in a fixed block to determine the relative positions of the points of the combs 3, 10 as the latter is swung up to the former. In use, a folded edge strip (1, Figs. 8-12 not shown) for attachment to a garment edge (17) has both edges impaled on the points of comb 3 and a rod 15 is placed in the bight between the edges. Comb 10 is swung up into a stitch transfer position and one edge of border strip 1 is pushed onto its points by the rod (15). The comb 10 is swung back to a position (Fig. 10) where the garment edge may then be placed in the bight (Fig. 11 not shown) and impaled, the rod 15 withdrawn, placed under the points of comb 3 and used to move the other edge of the strip on to the points of comb 10 after the latter has moved back to the transfer position. The comb 10, with the strip and garment edge correctly impaled thereon is then removed. from supports 7 and transferred, to a straight bar linking machine (Fig. 13, not shown).
