1340205 Feeding sheets FERAG FEHR & REIST AG 21 Dec 1970 [9 Jan 1970] 60514/70 Heading B8R An apparatus for opening folded products Z3 comprises conveying means, e.g. an endless band 4 running in a plane inclined at 15 degrees to the vertical and co-operating presser rollers 27 on an endless chain 23, and a pair of entrainment means, e.g. an endless band 37 and cooperating presser rollers 63 on an endless chain 62, for acting upon the flat opposed surfaces of the products, the entrainment means being driven through paths of travel which are located in the plane of conveyance of the products, the directions C1, C2 of movement of said entrainment means enclosing an acute angle alpha lying in said plane and each possessing a directional component C1, C21 substantially coinciding with the direction of conveyance of the products. Folded newspapers may be fed via conveyers (21), Fig. 1 (not shown), to a slide track (2) coplanar with conveyer band 4, the folded edges being supported on a wall 20,as far as the end of the entrainment means which buckle a side of the folded product to allow insertion of an opening wedge 68, a newspaper insert being located in the space 70 and falling into the opened newspaper as the newspaper falls from the support wall 20. A bulge (71), Fig. 5 (not shown), in the slide track 2 may be provided near the entrainment means to bend and therefore stiffen the folded products, and to initiate buckling. A number of apparatuses may be hingedly connected, Fig. 6 (not shown), to form a production line, newspapers being fed to each apparatus as the apparatus reaches an infeed station (112) and inserts (B1), Fig. 9 (not shown), being fed in at station (113). In this case movable newspaper supports (91) are used and a single rotating segment (108) replaces the wedge 68. A gripper (118) may hold the buckled product in position.
