1339698 Measuring moisture content electrically OLIN CORP 30 June 1972 [7 July 1971] 30761/72 Heading G1N In the determination of the moisture content of a fluid by passing the aeriform fluid over D.C. potential energized electrodes coated with a film of hygroscopic material the ratio of the rate of flow of the fluid in ml/min to the exposed area of the hygroscopic material in cm<SP>2</SP> exceeds a minimum of 250/1 such that only a small part of the moisture is removed by the hygroscopic material and a steady state is established between the water absorbed in the hygroscopic material and the water content of the fluid. The electrolysing current is measured to give a measure of the water content. The electrodes may be platinum and the hygroscopic substance phosphorus pentoxide, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, potassium metaphosphate or silicic acid. The fluid may be air, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, phosgene, carbon dioxide, an aliphatic hydrocarbon or a halogen-substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon.
