Abstract

1339674 Coated carbon body BENDIX CORP 15 Feb 1972 [11 March 1971] 6989/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C3 and B2] A coating applied to a carbon substrate to protect the carbon surface from oxidizing in a moist atmosphere comprises in per cent by weight of the total dry coating (1) 10-65% based on the elemental boron contribution only of at least one of boron, boron oxides, boron carbide, boron nitride or other boron-containing compounds in which the element boron comprises at least 25% of the compound weight, (2) 10-85% based on the metal element contribution only of at least one of Cr, V, Me, Nb, W, their oxides or other compounds containing these elements in which said elements comprise at least 50% of the compound weight, and (3) 5-50% of a carbonizable resin, e.g. phenolics or polymerized furfuryl alcohol, which forms a matrix bond with the carbon substrate to hold materials (1) and (2) adjacent the carbon surface upon being charred, materials (1) and (2) reacting mutually with oxygen in an oxidizing atmosphere to form a water insoluble oxide surface through which the penetration of oxygen is inhibited. The coating is applied in the form of a slurry or paste using an organic solvent, such as acetone, and after drying the coated substrate the resin is cured. A second layer is optionally applied in the same way to fill any surface irregularities. The cured resin is then carbonized by slowly heating to 1400-2000‹ F. in an inert atmosphere. In the examples coatings are prepared from a phenolic resin, boron and one of Cr, W, Mo, V, Nb and chromium oxide.
