1339621 Chromatography ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS Ltd 22 May 1972 [21 May 1971] 16274/71 Heading B1X An apparatus for separating an individual component from a multi-component sample comprises a column formed from a material which is non-absorbent to the components of the sample, a sample inlet adjacent to one end of the column, an outlet adjacent to the other end of the column, and an exhaust port and a carrier gas inlet port intermediate between the sample inlet and the outlet with the exhaust port located between the sample inlet and the carrier gas inlet port, means for moving a carrier formed from or containing a chromatographic packing material through the column from the one end to the other end thereof, and means for heating the column at least over the lengths thereof between the exhaust port and the carrier gas inlet port and the carrier gas inlet port and the outlet respectively such that the temperature of the column increases from the one end to the other end thereof. The carrier may be a belt, thin film or cord of an elastomeric material or foamed plastic. As shown a column has sample inlet 1, exhaust port 2, carrier gas inlet 3, outlet 4 and second carrier gas inlet 5; there may be another outlet between 5 and the end of the column. There are heating means 15 between 2 and 3, 3 and 4, and 4 and 5 and there may be cooling means, not shown, between 1 and 2.
