1339088 Pipe couplings HYDROTECH PRODUCTION SERVICES Inc 4 April 1972 15394/72 Heading F2G In connecting misaligned pipes under water, a trial connection is made on a dry model, so that the underwater connecting means may be the more readily assembled from positional data obtained from the model. As shown, wands 56 are releasably attached to the pipes to represent the pipe axes and the pipe ends are moved until the wands intersect. In this position, the maximum and minimum distances between the rims of the pipes and their relationships to the vertical are measured. A model is constructed with the same angular measurements and, in the model, the canted flanges 14 (which are carried on loose sleeves 12) are turned until they mate. A coincident pair of numbers and the position of the low vertical point are read off and set up on the underwater connection, in which the flanges 14 are accordingly oriented to the mating position. The sleeves 12 are then moved axially along the tubes 11, by pneumatic rams (25, Fig. 3, not shown). The flanges 14, one of which may be loose to assist in aligning the bolt holes, are bolted together and the sleeves 12 secured to the pipes 11.
