Abstract

1339051 Boring earth and rock VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT BUROVOI TEKHNIKI 7 Jan 1971 [7 Jan 1970] 871/71 Heading E1F A device for applying down-pressure to a bit 8, comprises a cylinder 1 connected to a drill pipe 5, a piston rod 2 connected to a drill pipe 6 and axially movable within the cylinder, and a stack of abutting inner and outer rings 14, 13, each ring having a frusto conical face or faces facing its adjacent ring or rings, and each of the inner rings forming a wedge between the two adjacent rings. Hydrostatic pressure of drilling mud in a channel 7 provides a "static" component of down-pressure. Axial vibrations are generated by the rotation of the bit 8 by a down-hole motor 9. In Fig. 1, compression pulses of the vibration rising from the bit are reflected from the flange 2a, while tension pulses are damped by the rings 13, 14. In Fig. 2, where the rings are supported on an extension 17 of the drill pipe 5 which is axially movable in the rod 2, and are confined between the flange 2a and the top of the cylinder, compression pulses are damped by the rings, while tension pulses are reflected from the flange 2a. The selective transmission or damping of pulses is stated to enhance drilling efficiency.
