1338932 Dianhydrides of aromatic tetracarboxylic acids INSTITUT KHIMICHESKOI FIZIKI AKADEMII NAUK SSSR 1 Jan 1971 168/71 Heading C2C Compounds of the general Formula I where R is (a) an arylene group selected from p-phenylene, m-phenylene, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylene, 3,31-dimethyl-4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylene, 4,41-diphenylenoxide, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylenemethane and 4,4<SP>1</SP>- diphenylenesulphone; or (b) a group -CH = N-R<SP>11</SP>-N=CH- where R<SP>11</SP> is an arylene group selected from p-phenylene, m-phenylene, 4,41 - diphenylene 3,3<SP>1</SP>-diphenylene, 3,3<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl - 4,41 - diphenylene, 3,31 - dimethoxy- 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylene, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylene-oxide, 4,41- diphenylenemethane, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylene sulphone, 4,4<SP>1</SP> - diphenylene - sulphide, 1,4 - naphthylene, 1,5-naphthylene, 2,5-naphthylene, 2,7-naphthylene and 1,4-anthrylene; or (c) a group where R<SP>111</SP> is selected from >C< or and where R<SP>IV</SP> is selected from H, OH and = O ; or (d) a group -CH 2 OCO-R<SP>V</SP>-COOCH 2 - where R<SP>v</SP> is selected from p-phenylene, mphenylene, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenylene, 1,4-naphthylene, 1,5-naphthylene, 2,6-naphthylene and 2,7-naphthylene; or (e) R is absent; R<SP>1</SP> is selected from H, phenyl and naphthyl; n is 1 or 2; (and which compounds are claimed as novel provided that R<SP>1</SP> is not hydrogen when R is p-phenylene or mphenylene); are prepared by effecting a Diels- Alder reaction between maleic anhydride and a bis-furanic compound to form a compound of general Formula II and dehydrating this compound II with an acidic reagent. Bis-furanic compounds and compounds of Formulµ I and II are prepared in the examples.
