Abstract

1338663 Sorting resistor bases J N ANDREEV G F ANTONOV A F ROZHKOV and V V KITAEV 25 Aug 1971 39863/71 Heading G1A In a device for scanning the surfaces of resistor bases, resistors pass one by one from a hopper 1 along a tube 3 and an accumulator 5 into radial grooves in a rotating disc 7 and leave via a window 14 and are presented to a manipulator device 15. Each base is received on one pair of a number of rotating rollers spaced around an intermittently rotating drum 17. Each base is thus caused to rotate and is brought to a checking position where it is scanned by a light beam produced from a source 19 and reflected off a scanning unit 20. Each base stays in the checking position to enable all its surface to be scanned and the reflected light is received by a transducer 21 whose signals are used to operate a solenoid 22 controlling a classification tray 23 which sorts the base in dependence upon the presence of any surface flaws. The disc 7 is covered by a casing 9 with a window 14 and having a projection 10 with a spring 8 adjacent a limit switch 12 which causes a reversion in the direction of rotation of disc 7. When a resistor is too big and gets stuck in the window 14 the casing 9 moves with the disc causing the projection 10 to strike the limit switch 12, which causes the disc 7 to rotate in the opposite direction to release the resistor and the spring 8, then returns the casing 9 to its initial position and activates the limit switch again. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2, (not shown), having the same positioning of the optical and photo-electric components the disc 17 and its rollers are replaced by two rollers each 26 with diametrically opposed grooves shaped to receive the resistors. The rollers' axes are in a plane inclined at 45 degrees to the base of the apparatus and the resistors are fed on to an inclined guideway where they are picked up one by one by the uppermost roller and brought into a checking position between the two rollers. In the checking position it is scanned by the light beam before the groove in the other roller takes it away to be sorted by a classification tray depending on any surface flaws.
