Abstract

1338513 Polymeric flocculant GAF CORP 19 April 1971 [9 April 1970] 26122/71 Heading C1C [Also in Divisions C3 and D2] A cationic copolymer useful as a flocculating agent in water treatment comprises the recurring units wherein X is an anion, R is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R 2 and R 3 are alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or, together with the nitrogen atom, form a morpholine residue, Z is hydrogen or-CH 2 N<SP>+</SP>R 2 R 3 R 4 X<SP>-</SP> and at least 20% of the groups R 4 are residues of a quaternizing agent, the remainder being hydrogen. The polymers are derived by aminomethylation and quaternization from a polymer of 25-95% by wt. of an N-vinyl lactam and 5-75% of acrylamide or methacrylamide. Examples describe the use of the flocculant in the treatment of raw sewage and river water, in flocculating an aqueous dispersion of carbon black and as a filler retention aid in paper making. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,141,166.
