1338242 Shower supply connecting unit FINNISH VALVE CO Ltd 9 Sept 1971 [28 Aug 1970] 41414/70 Heading A4N A connecting unit for coupling a flexible handspray hose to a valve (not shown) comprises a chamber 2 having a water inlet 17 for connection to the valve, a water outlet 23 for connection to the hose 25, and within the chamber, a valve permanently biased into engagement with a seat in the wall of the chamber and arranged, in the event of suction developing in the chamber, for moving from the seat against the bias so as to admit air to the chamber. The base 3 of the chamber is formed with an air inlet adjacent an end 6. An externally threaded bush 9, with an outer flange 10, is screwed into a bore at this end, a sealing ring 11 providing a seal with the base. The inner end of the bush extends into the chamber and provides an annular valve seat on which the vertically-disposed valve sits. The valve comprises a disc 12 on a spindle 13 which is axially slidable within a guide 14. A sealing disc (15), Fig.2 (not shown) engages the valve seat and is held in contact with the disc 12 by a central screw 16. In normal use the valve is held on to its valve seat by the pressure of water in the chamber, and by its own weight, but should the pressure fall due to the handspray falling into a bath of water with a tap open at a lower level on the same water supply, then the valve is raised from its seat and air is drawn into the chamber through the air inlet. This reduces the suction and prevents water being siphoned out of the bath through the hose 25. Alternatively, the valve may not necessarily be adapted for vertical movement and/or may be otherwise biased towards its closed condition.
