Abstract
1338072 Area measuring machine TURNER MACHINERY Ltd 26 Nov 1970 [27 Nov 1969] 58051/69 Heading G1X A machine for measuring the area of sheet material e.g. leather, includes a series of wheels 46 arranged side by side to run, without slipping, over the sheet material fed between a driven transparent roller tube 14 and the wheels 46, each wheel having a series of equally spaced and diametrally opposed peripheral holes 56 such that when sheet material is passed through the machine it breaks one or more light beams passing through some of the holes between a fluorescent light tube 26 within the roller tube 14 and stationary photo-electric detector cells 76 associated with each wheel, the electrical signals produced by these breaks being sampled and summed to give a measure of the area of the sheet material. A further fluorescent light tube 96 and photo-electric detector cell 74 may be associated with each wheel, aligned diametrically opposite the first detector cell 76 to provide a coincidence method of ensuring the machine's correct functioning, a summing signal or pulse being provided when only one and not both detector cells sense light. Since the holes 56 in the periphery of each wheel 46 are spaced a unit distance apart and the wheels 46 are also spaced a unit distance apart, each integration pulse represents a unit of area, the sum of the pulses, processed by an electronic computing device 87, being shown on an indicator 112. The device 87 scans each pair of cells 74, 76 at a high frequency compared with the pulse duration to avoid under recording due to the simultaneous receipt of pulses from two or more pairs of associated cells. Clamping devices (92, 94), as shown in Fig. 3, prevent sheet material being fed backwards through the machine.
