Abstract

1337495 Modifying thermoplastic polymers NITTO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 30 April 1971 [30 April 1970] 13006/71 Heading C3P Thermoplastic high molecular weight polymers are modified by irradiating with light in the presence of À01 to 40 weight per cent of a volatile, light-activated, chlorine-containing organic compound selected from trichloroethane, hexachloroethane, dichloroethane, carbon tetrachloride, mono-, di- and tri-chlorobenzenes and monochloronitrobenzene. The polymers may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyacrylates, polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl alcohol, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyamides, polyethers, natural and synthetic rubbers, silicones, polyvinyl fluoride and polyvinylidene fluoride. Photosensitizers, e.g. 2-methyl anthraquinone, benzophenone, benzaldehyde, anthrone and 1,4-naphthoquinone; and cross-linking agents, e.g. alkylene bisacrylamides, 5 - acrylamino - N - acrylocaproamide and glycol dimethacrylates; may also be present. Examples describe the cross-linking by irradiation with a mercury lamp of (1 and 4) polyethylene with triohloroethane, (2) polyethylene with trichloroethane and benzophenone, (3) polyethylene with 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene, (5) polyethylene with 1,2-dichloroethane, (6) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with trichloroethane, (7) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate and trichloroethane, and (8) ethylene/propylene rubber with chlorobenzene.
