Abstract

1337425 Containers for centrifuges ROHE SCIENTIFIC CORP 8 Oct 1970 50591/72 Divided out of 1337424 Heading B2P [Also in Division B8] A container for holding a liquid-solids mixture, e.g. a blood specimen, during centrifugation has an upper tubular neck 19, Figs. 1b and 1h, in communication with an annular or partly annular, chamber 17 coaxial with, and located below, the neck and having a diameter substantially greater than the maximum diameter of the neck the chamber being capable of receiving and retaining the heavy components of the mixture when the container is rotated on its axis during centrifugation. The chamber 17 communicates with an internal double frusto-conical chamber within the container in which the light components 31 accumulates after centrifugation. A cylindrical base element 23 on the container is provided with recesses 27 which, when the container is placed in a trunnion cup of a centrifuging apparatus, as described in the Parent Specification, locates on a cooperative formation of the cup to prevent rotational movement between the container and the cup. A stopper may be provided in the neck of the container which can be evacuated. By using a double needle, one inserted in the vein of a patient and the other through the stopper, blood may be aspirated into the container. In Fig. 1f, the annular chamber 17c is inclined downwardly so as to form a lip over which the specimen has to pass to enter the chamber. In Fig. 1c, the annular chamber 17a is knob-shaped in cross-section. In Fig. 1d, the annular chamber 17b has a triangular cross-section being formed as a continuation of the internal double frustoconical chamber.
