Abstract
1337230 Flexible glass fibre optical conduits AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 25 Nov 1971 54730/71 Heading C1M [Also in Division G2] A flexible glass fibre optical conduit 10 comprises a multiplicity of juxtaposed light conducting fibres 12 each having a light conducting core of glass surrounded by a relatively thin cladding of glass having a lower refractive index than that of the core glass, the fibres being connected together, at at least one region, as at both ends, by a matrix glass which is substantially silica free. Residual silica between the fibres is thus avoided. At the junctions 14 of the fused and unfused fibres, sheaths 16 of heat-shrinkable plastic may be provided. Further, a flexible sheathing of plastic, woven and/or linked metal may be provided along a major portion of the conduit; image-forming objective and eyepiece lens systems may be added or coupling means to light emitting and receiving stations. The glass given for the matrix is B 2 O 3 47; BaO 45 and La 2 O 3 8 in percentages by weight and the leaching solution is 5% by volume HCl at 65‹ C. Specification 1,319,879 is referred to.
