Abstract

Sept. 3, 1918, [Convention date] Compound piston pumps; actuating pumps by fluid-pressure motors.-In a two-stage air or gas compressor wherein the first and second stages of compression take place in the crank case and cylinder respectively, the compressed fluid from the crank case is transferred to the cylinder through a passage leading to a valve-controlled inlet in the cylinder head the valve being closed by a spring and opening under an assigned pressure. As shown, air enters the crank case by a spring-controlled valve 7 and is compressed on the down stroke of the piston and delivered to a passage 9. At the end of the stroke a valve at the end of the passage introduces the air through the cylinder head. Air also enters the cylinder by a valve 11 in the head during the down stroke. On the up stroke, the air is further compressed in the cylinder and delivered through a valve 13 and the crank case is again filled through the valve 7. A compression group comprises two compressing and two driving cylinders working on the two-stroke cycle mounted on the same shaft on a single frame or chassis. Regulating devices may be provided; cooling is effected by air or water circulation. Any kind of motor may be used, and the valves may be operated mechanically. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the passage 9 may terminate at a port in the cylinder wall which is shut off by the piston from the upper part of the cylinder during the main part of the stroke, but opened thereto when the piston is in its lowest position, as shown in Fig. 1 (Cancelled). This subject-matter does not appear in the Speeification as accepted.
