Abstract

1336709 Variable speed gears AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO Ltd 5 Nov 1970 [5 Nov 1969] 54177/69 Heading F2D A transmission (e.g. driven by a motor vehicle engine via a fluid torque converter 10 and driving road wheels of the vehicle) comprises planetary gearing with a carrier 13, 14 mounting clusters of two bevel planet pinions 16, 17 meshing with four bevel sun gears 18, 19, 28, 29 of which two 18, 19 are selectively connectible by two friction clutches 11, 12 to an input shaft, the output shaft 42 being selectively connectible by a dog clutch device 37 ... 39 to the third bevel gear 28 and the carrier 13, 14, for forward and reverse, the fourth bevel gear 29 being holdable by a brake 35 (as may the input shaft, the gear 28 and the shaft 42 by brakes 45, 34 and 44 the latter being positive). The brakes 34 and 35 and the clutches 11 and 12 may be fluid pressure applied under the control of a valve 48 with two spools controlled, one manually at 51, the other by a centrifugal governor 52. The brake 45 may be applied by a valve 49 only when the lever 51 is in "neutral". The lever 51 shown selectively moves three rods 54, 55, 56 axial. From the neutral position the lever 51 may either move the rod 56 alone to engage the sprag brake 44, at lever 82 and release the brake 45 via a lost motion link 78, 83 and the valve 49, or move both rods 55 and 54 a limited distance, rod 55 moving the dog clutch mechanism 37 ... 39 to one of its engaged positions, and rod 54 controlling the valve 48 via a linkage 62 ... 65 and via a resilient connection 69, the valve 49. In one direction, further movement of the lever 51 selects the transmission ratio manually. The fluid pressure available to operate the clutches and brakes may be limited in valve 49 by a cam and link 102 connection with the throttle control at small throttle settings.
