Abstract

1336620 Making axles; forging dies MANNESMANNROHREN-WERKE GmbH 19 April 1971 [23 Feb 1970] 21163/71 Headings B3A and B3H A hollow one-piece axle is made from a uniform walled tube 11 by forging without a mandrel the tube ends between forging hammers which act in opposed pairs as the tube is slowly rotated and advanced axially between them. There are preferably four hammers. The advance of the tube is slowed down when the tube end is at a conical part of the hammer recesses and speeded up for the cylindrical parts. During forging the hammers are periodically arranged to have a shorter stroke so that they do not reach their final spacing. The starting tube may have a circular, oral, rectangular or square cross-section and may be heated.
