Abstract
1336488 Electromedical apparatus; monitoring respiration ELECTRONICS MONITORS Inc 14 Dec 1971 [14 Dec 1970 1 Sept 1971] 58003/71 Heading G1N Respiration of a patient is monitored using a flexible capacitive transducer 11 which is arranged to be subjected to the forces produced by movements of respiration. As described, the transducer, Fig 2, is arranged under the mattress of a bed, Fig 1 (not shown), and consists of alternate layers of conductive 37, 41, 45 (eg sheet steel) and non-conductive 39, 43 (eg acrylic. or cellulose) material, the structure being surrounded by a cover 33 of non-conducting material. A coaxial cable 19, having its inner conductor connected to layer 41 and its shield connected to layers 37 and 45, Fig 7 (not shown), leads to a monitoring circuit, Fig 3, which operates to energise a lamp 29 with respiration, and provide an alarm by means of a lamp 31 and a speaker 27 when breathing stops. The amplifier circuit 77 is described in connection with Fig 4 (not shown) the lamp switching circuit 79 with Fig 5 (not shown), and the audio switching circuit 85 with Fig 6 (not shown). The lamp circuit may include a memory to indicate when breathing stops temporarily, Fig 8 (not shown). Respiration rate may be indicated by circuitry, Fig 9 (not shown), connected to the output of amplifier 77.
