Abstract

1336315 Purifying natural gas WINTERSHALL AG 23 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 55639/70 Heading C5E Natural gas is purified of elementary sulphur in a borehole by delivering a liquid hydrocarbon to the bottom of the bore in amounts ranging from 1 litre of hydrocarbon to from 4 to 20 nm. of natural gas. The hydrocarbon should have a viscosity ranging from 2 to 200 cps. at 20‹ C., and a vapour pressure of up to 3 x 10<SP>-1</SP> mmHg. at 20‹ C. Examples are diesel oil, spindle oil, light machine oil, benzene, toluene and xylene, and a surface active agent, e.g. a fatty acid amine, may be added. The oil &c. may be regenerated and recycled. A circular flow of gas/liquid up the bore is stated to be achieved. The ratio of oil to natural gas is increased from 1 : 20 (litres per mn<SP>3</SP>.) for gas having a sulphur content up to 0À1 gm. per nm<SP>3</SP>., to 1 : 4 for gas having above 2 and up to 5 gms per nm<SP>3</SP>.
