Abstract

1336270 Therapeutic heating apparatus; massage M ST CLAIR 16 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 47589/72 Heading A5R Therapeutic apparatus for treatment of congestion and infection in the mouth, nasal cavity &c comprises a fluid chamber (30) in which fluid may be received, stored and discharged; a fluid-pump (22) for circulating the fluid to and from a hand-held applicator 14; and a heater (24) for heating the fluid which is thermostatically controlled. The heater and the pump are both controlled by the knob (26). The fluid chamber (30) is inside a pedestal 12 which includes a saddle 20 on which is placed the applicator when not in use. The applicator 14 (Figs. 3-5 not shown) is connected to the chamber (30) through the flexible tube 16 and comprises a handle (40) and a hollow pliable pillow 42 connected to the end of the handle, which when in use is placed against the roof P of the mouth. A slight extension of the handle (46) along part of the surface of the pillow serves to support the pillow when in use. Fluid is supplied to the pillow (42) through conduit (38) and returns through conduit 39 the latter having a smaller total cross-sectional area so that the pillow 42 is kept inflated when applied to the roof of the mouth. The pump (22) may provide either a continuous flow or a pulsating flow in which latter case the pillow 42 will flex slightly and a massaging movement will also be provided.
