Abstract

1335971 Wheel assemblies DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 27 Nov 1970 [15 Jan 1970] 1946/70 Heading B7C A wheel assembly 1 for supporting a tubeless pneumatic tyre so as to prevent detachment of the tyre bead regions 10 from the wheel comprises a rim having a pair of circumferentially extending rim flanges 3 in axially spaced apart relationship, rim seats 2 being provided for seating the bead regions 10 of the tyre and an annular bead spacer 4, e.g. of rolled mild steel sheet, for location between the flanges 3, the spacer 4 having substantially radially extending flanges 5, one opposed to each of the rim flanges 3, spaces 8 being provided in the assembled state between opposed rim and spacer flanges within which tyre bead regions 10 can be located, the spacer 4 having a radially outwardly arched portion 7 between its flanges so that upon inflation of a tyre mounted over the spacer 4, the inflation pressure increases the overall width of the spacer to cause bead grip. The wheel 1 may be divided and may be made of rolled mild steel sheet. Each rim flange 3 has an axially outwardly curved portion 3a on its outer periphery. Each flange 5 is axially inwardly curved at 5a.
