Abstract

1335827 Hot-air dryers REDMAN BROUGHTON Ltd 6 Nov 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 60203/69 Heading A5R [Also in Division F4] Apparatus for drying an inanimate or animate article, such as a person's hands, comprises a body extending around a drying zone and having an access opening, a heat source R for heating air, means M for passing air over the heat source and for delivering the so-heated air to said zone, and a sensitive element 22 mounted in a position on the body so that it responds to and becomes activated only by the presence of an article within the drying zone, and being shielded by the body from activation by members outside the body, the sensitive element controlling the heat source and delivering means so that the heat source is continuously or intermittently energised at a relatively low average rate in the absence of an article in said zone, and in the presence of an article in said zone the delivering means is activated and the heat source is energised at a relatively high rate. The element 22, which may be of the type described in Specification 756,554 is connected to a detector 20, supplied from a power source 10 connected to the mains L, N, and in the presence of an article in the drying zone causes a relay coil RL to be energised to close contacts Al, starting an air impeller motor M, and to change over contacts A2 so that heater R, protected by a thermal cut out TC, is supplied from a higher voltage top tl than a top t2 supplying the heater in the absence of an article. In alternative embodiments the contacts A2 shunt out a ballast resistor or a device causing the heater to be supplied with pulses of current, or the heater has more than one element which are changed from series to parallel connection by the relay. The heater element or elements may be mounted on a ceramic former having a device maintaining a constant former temperature. The apparatus may be arranged so that the heater is at a constant temperature whether or not air is being blown over it by the impeller.
