Abstract

1335803 Transistor comparators GENERAL MOTORS CORP 9 March 1972 [29 April 1971] 10943/72 Heading H3T [Also in Division G4] In a lighting system comprising at least one lamp 46, a resistance 50 is connected in series with lamp 46, the voltage across resistor 50 being monitored by a differential comparator 56<SP>1</SP>, 58<SP>1</SP>, the output of the comparator being monitored at 88<SP>1</SP> so as to provide a signal to an amplifier 40 and indicator 42 of failure of lamp 46. As described, lamp 46 may be a "running lamp" energized whenever the ignition switch 48 of a vehicle is closed. Resistance 50 is arranged to drop 20 mV and may merely be wiring resistance. Transistors 78<SP>1</SP>, 80<SP>1</SP> are controlled by a Zener diode 74<SP>1</SP> so that constant current flows through diodes 52<SP>1</SP>, 54<SP>1</SP>; the voltages dropped in diodes 52<SP>1</SP> and 54<SP>1</SP> are such that normally transistor 56<SP>1</SP> passes more current than 58<SP>1</SP> but resistors 60<SP>1</SP>, 62<SP>1</SP> are adjusted so that the collector voltages of transistor 56<SP>1</SP> and 58<SP>1</SP> are equal when lamp 46 is operating. Failure of lamp 46 causes decrease in current of transistor 561 and increase in that of transistor 58<SP>1</SP> so that the detecting transistor 88<SP>1</SP> is turned on which feeds a signal via diode 110 to an amplifier 40 which operates lamp 42. A similar arrangement is utilized for monitoring pairs of headlamps 14, 15; 16, 17. Diodes 70, 72, 102,108 provide temperature compensation.
