1335645 Vinyl phenyl methyl polysiloxane resins of low hydroxy content DOW CORNING CORP 8 March 1972 [11 March 1971] 10770/72 Heading C3T [Also in Division C1] A liquid polysiloxane contains 15-55 mol. per cent CH 3 SiO 3 / 2 , 2-20 mol. per cent (C 6 H 5 ) 2 SiO, 20-40 mol. per cent C 6 H 5 SiO 3 / 2 , 10-40 mol. per cent (CH 3 )(CH 2 =CH)SiO or CH 2 =CHSiO 3 / 2 , 0-25 mol. per cent (C 6 H 5 )(CH 3 )SiO and 0-25 mol. per cent (CH 3 ) 2 SiO units, having 1À3-1À6 organic groups per Si and containing less than 1 wt. per cent of OH groups, this last feature distinguishing it from the otherwise identical resins of Specification 1,279,794. It may be made by hydrolysis of the appropriate silane mixture followed by a bodying reaction in the presence of a silanol condensation catalyst. The polysiloxane may be cured using conventional peroxide catalysts in amount 0À1-10 wt. per cent, at 150‹ C. or higher. Ceramic materials are obtained by mixing the polysiloxane with Mg, Al or Zr silicates, SiO 2 , MgO, Al 2 O 3 , ZnO, SiC, Si 3 N 4 or ThO 2 in amount 80-90 wt. per cent of the total, curing the composition and heating it at 500-2000‹ C. Moulding compositions may be prepared containing the polysiloxane and 40-90 wt. per cent of, e.g. silica, carbon black, talc, asbestos or glass fibres; the silica-filled composition is useful encapsulating electronic components. Other uses include electrical varnishes and protective coatings for metals.
