Abstract

1335466 Optical particle sensor COULTER ELECTRONICS INC 29 Jan 1971 3496/71 Heading G1A [Also in Division G2] In an optical particle sensor for determining size and concentration of particles suspended in a flowing liquid or gas, a truncated conical light guide 24 is attached to the receiving surface 21 of the detector 18 to direct light scattered by the particles thereto. Light transmitted directly through the fluid on the optical axis is directed away from the detector by a tube 22 which is blackened so as to absorb this light and has a specularly reflecting surface so as to conduct away light down the tube which is not immediately absorbed by the black colour. The end 23 of tube 22 is open and its outer end closed. The surface 26 of the cone member 24 is curved such that its centre of curvature lies at the axis of flow of the fluid under test, at which point light from a filament lamp is focused. The guide member 24 is cast of plastics material and has an outer aluminium coating 27 to direct all the collected light towards the detector which is a photomultiplier.
