Abstract

1335353 Isolating polymers from aqueous dispersions BAYER AG 18 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 54795/70 Headings C3G and C3P A process for working up aqueous dispersions of polymers (as specified below) into powders of limited water and precipitant content and substantially uniform grain size comprises the following steps: (i) the aqueous polymer dispersion and a precipitant are intensively mixed under conditions of high turbulence, (ii) precipitation is carried out whilst maintaining conditions of high turbulence at a temperature below the sintering temperature of the polymer, (iii) the resulting polymer particles are agglomerated and hardened in the precipitation liquor under conditions of turbulence which diminish in at least one stage, and (iv) the precipitation liquor and agglomerated polymer particles are separated from one another. An apparatus for carrying out the process is described. The polymers which can be used comprise polystyrene; copolymers of styrene with other monomers (e.g. acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, α- methylstyrene and halo-styrenes); polymethyl methacrylate; homopolymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride and/or vinyl acetate; so-called "two-phase plastics", i.e. elastic-thermoplastic polymers comprising an elastomeric component and a hard brittle component, e.g. a mixture of a copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile and/ or styrene with a copolymer of acrylonitrile and styrene or α-methylstyrene, or a graft polymer obtained by polymerizing styrene or methyl methacrylate on to a butadiene-styrene or butadiene-methyl methacrylate copolymer; and ABS graft polymers and other graft polymer products comprising (a) a polymer obtained by graft polymerizing a mixture of (i) styrene, an alkyl styrene and/or methyl methacrylate and (ii) acrylonitrile, an alkyl-substituted acrylonitrile and/or an alkyl methacrylate onto a conjugated diolefin polymer, and optionally (b) a thermoplastic polymer or copolymer of monomers as specified in (a) (i) and (a) (ii). Suitable precipitants include electrolytes such as calcium chloride, magnesium sulphate and aluminium sulphate, and carboxylic acids such as acetic acid and oxalic acid.
